[20:39:22]moderator :It’s nearly 9.00 pm Warsaw time and almost 3.00 pm Toronto time

[20:38:49]Craven :hello

[20:40:08]moderator :we\'ll be starting the chat point 9.00 pm Warsaw time do just in about 5 minutes

[20:41:18]moderator :please remember this chat will take place in English

[20:43:25]MarclaCruz :hello

[20:44:56]Piotr Herod :Hello

[20:45:22]kuosu :hi

[20:45:40]l.m-siewicz :hello:)

[20:46:36]moderator :Hello Guys, once again, please give us a couple more minutes

[20:38:05]pogar :What did you enjoy while making Avatar movie?

[20:51:22]moderator :Just a moment guys, Adam and Hugh, our today\'s IMAX experts are logging to the chat, I\'ll let you know, when they join us and we\'\'l start with the questions

[20:51:57]Marcin :Ok!

[20:52:59]Adam - Expert IMAX :Hello everyone. just a background on me. I am the DMR Production Supervisor and have been a part of every IMAX DMR title. The experience of the IMAX version of Avatar enabled us to work with one of the pre-eminent filmmakers in the world.

[20:54:02]Adam - Expert IMAX :DMR is what we call the DIgital re-mastering of Hollywood films

[21:03:26]Adam - Expert IMAX :We\'re working through some login issues. This is Hugh Murray, Senior VP of Film Production at IMAX and the Producer for the IMAX version. I\'ll answer some of the questions and Adam and I will identify ourselves as we answer.

[21:00:24]Negatywny :why is imax better than dolby digital 3D?

[21:04:51]moderator2 :Everything is okay, thanks for your patience

[21:06:16]Hugh - Expert IMAX :IMAX is different from other 3D systems- our uniquely immersive theatre geometry and the vivid picture supplied by our proprietary projections systems put you \"in\" the three dimensional space in a very realistic way.

[21:07:02]pogar :What did you enjoy while making Avatar movie?

[21:09:12]Hugh - Expert IMAX :Making the IMAX 3D version was not just an opportunity to work with a great filmmaker, but being part of this unique picture before the rest of the world had seen anything felt like being in on a huge secret.

[21:09:25]Hugh - Expert IMAX :The technical challenges were fun too.

[21:07:43]Mimic :What was the most difficult part of production in 3D?

[21:12:38]Hugh - Expert IMAX :There are many challenges - 3D films are actually two films that run at the same time, a right eye and a left eye version. The two eyes have to match perfectly. The whole post process is more involved etc.

[21:13:23]moderator2 :Yes, please continue to ask more questions of Hugh and Adam about the IMAX 3D production of the movie, their speciality!

[21:12:44]Craven :Was there much interaction with Cameron and his team? Or did you just made IMAX verision and waited for green light from him?

[21:13:50]Hugh - Expert IMAX :This was also an unusually long 3D film, with many FX shots that didn\'t always arrive in sequence. A lot of tracking was involved

[21:13:59]Piotr Herod :How long it took to prepare the IMAX version of the movie ?

[21:15:19]l.m-siewicz :Using DMR technology , do you convert \"flat\" movie or the 3D version?

[21:16:08]Adam - Expert IMAX :We were directly involoved with James Cameron and his team, every step of the process was viewed by him and his team. A lot of tracking is required to ensure that the picture was exactly how he wanted his vision to be.

[21:17:37]Hugh - Expert IMAX :Piotr - we started working with the Production at the beginning of the year, and actually testing individual shots for JC in April. We started working really hard on the final versions of everything in August.

[21:18:40]Adam - Expert IMAX :thanks for the question l.m-siewicz. For the DMR process apply our technology on both eyes of the image.

[21:19:35]Adam - Expert IMAX :that is to say we process both the left eye and right eye images

[21:16:08]Craven :Apart from size, what are (if any) diffrences in manufacturing and printing analog reels for IMAX to regular reels?

[21:22:34]Hugh - Expert IMAX :Size has real impacts on the post process. For example films are assembled in reels, and the 35mm version of Avatar had 10 reels in each eye. Because of the size of IMAX frames our version had 47 reels per eye which had implications throughout

[21:22:52]Hugh - Expert IMAX :the whole post production chain.

[21:23:34]moderator :Hi guys once again, please remember that we\'re talking technology IMAX experts, so please keep this in mind while asking your questions

[21:22:49]Marcin :Are you satisfied with your work?

[21:24:53]Hugh - Expert IMAX :Yes - the film is awesome in IMAX 3D and it was a privilege to work on.

[21:24:53]Craven :Do you think IMAX is in any way endangered by digital one-projector 3D technologies? They got very common in most cinemaplexes.

[21:26:43]Hugh - Expert IMAX :No - I think the IMAX 3D remains unique and the best there is. But be your own judge - have you compared?

[21:26:24]filmpro :do you think that we will soon have also DIGITAL imax 3d? do you plan such a thing?

[21:27:59]Adam - Expert IMAX :There is a theatre in Lodz and it will be showing AVATAR IMAX 3D

[21:29:02]Adam - Expert IMAX :this theatre is IMAX digital.

[21:32:11]moderator2 :Please remember Hugh and Adam worked on the production of the movie in IMAX 3D, so maybe you have some more questions about that?

[21:31:55]Marcin :Do You like your job?I mean, it\'s more fun or more job?

[21:33:26]Hugh - Expert IMAX :Don\'t know about Adam but I feel very lucky to be doing this work and getting paid too!

[21:33:54]Adam - Expert IMAX :i\'d do it for free.

[21:33:43]Yankes :I would like to know if working with IMAX technology is exhausting and you need a break for some time after making Avatar movie?

[21:34:23]l.m-siewicz :Is James Cameron such a perfectionist like some people say?

[21:34:42]moviegirl :hello. are you going to make more movies like Avatar?

[21:35:39]Hugh - Expert IMAX :We don\'t get long breaks between films. Avatar was exhausting, but we\'re already working on Alice in Wonderland.

[21:35:28]Klaudia :What did You study before You become who You are?

[21:37:29]Hugh - Expert IMAX :James Cameron is a perfectionist, but he\' is unusually knowledgable about technical issues for a Director and so great for guys like us to work with.

[21:37:31]Craven :\"Alice...\" will be converted from 2D to 3D, is it same process that was done to few scenes in \"Superman Returns\"? Or are there any improvements since 2006?

[21:38:18]Czarek :What exectly is DMR, is it upscaling a video?

[21:40:04]Hugh - Expert IMAX :Craven - that\'s not strictly correct. The film is being produced in 3D and will be delivered to us that way. I know that some 2D/3D work is part of the production process, but it won\'t be done by IMAX.

[21:42:05]Hugh - Expert IMAX :DMR is a suite of software tools designed to translate feature films to IMAX while maximizing the image quality.

[21:41:30]Craven :So what you are saying is that it\'s easier to work with Cameron than most directors, since he understands process?

[21:42:41]l.m-siewicz :Would you describe shortly what exactly you were involved in during the procuction?

[21:43:51]loopez :you said \"translate to IMAX\" - translation is equal to worse quality in most of times?

[21:45:17]Hugh - Expert IMAX :Craven - not easier, the fact that he wants to bore into the details of every process and understands it all ensures that every version turns out exactly as he wants it.

[21:45:03]Piotr Herod :So you prepare Avatar on 70 mm tape and digital version for IMAX digital ?

[21:46:01]Hugh - Expert IMAX :That\'s not unique - there are other Directors who get involved in the detail, but it is not usual.

[21:45:52]Yankes :Do you think Avatar helped with IMAX technology and now we can expect more movies with IMAX technology?

[21:46:38]Adam - Expert IMAX :Piotr Herod - Yes there are two versions both 70mm film and IMAX digital.

[21:47:05]Adam - Expert IMAX :we apply the same DMR process to both versions

[21:47:38]pogar :Are there any additional scenes in IMAX version of Avatar?

[21:48:40]Czarek :Can you tell us a little more about DMR process?

[21:48:25]l.m-siewicz :\"we apply the same DMR process to both versions\" so isn\'t there any difference in picture on the screen ?

[21:49:40]Hugh - Expert IMAX :Yankes - Avatar was the biggest project to date that had both film and digital versions. That has certainly helped us smooth our post pipeline, and there are a whole slew of great 3D movies we\'ll be handling for next year.

[21:50:26]Maciej :Is there some special software to DRM processing?

[21:50:57]Adam - Expert IMAX :There are no additional scenes in the IMAX version, our version is exactly as James Cameron intended the film to be.

[21:52:17]Hugh - Expert IMAX :Maciej - all of the DMR processing software, for removing image noise and enhancing detail, are proprietary.

[21:52:48]loopez :DMR\'ed films in pipeline -both 3D and 2D, both toons and features ( Toy Story 3 is in DMR upcoming list ) - i know it is just process but \"what is easier - to DMR feature or DMR animation\" ?

[21:54:33]Hugh - Expert IMAX :Animation is easier - anything shot with a camera, even a digital camera, has noise. Rendered CG animation usually (but not always) doesn\'t.

[21:55:36]moderator2 :Any more questions for Hugh and Adam?

[21:55:42]l.m-siewicz :So you can enlarge it infinitely and it does not lose the quality?

[21:57:23]Hugh - Expert IMAX :No you can\'t enlarge infinitely without impacting quality.

[21:58:03]Hugh - Expert IMAX :Yankes - I go to the regular cinema all the time. I am and always have been a film lover.

[21:58:34]l.m-siewicz :What do you find the biggest advantage of your job?

[22:01:15]Adam - Expert IMAX :obviously being a part of the final process of some of the of the most anticipated films. Everyone we deal with understand that IMAX is a process that demands the highest regard for both picture and sound quality.

[22:01:44]Adam - Expert IMAX :and filmmakers get really excited about the thought of seeing their work on an IMAX screen

[22:02:11]Adam - Expert IMAX :We have heard often that they are seeing the film in a new way

[22:04:25]Hugh - Expert IMAX :I guess we\'re wrapping up now - I\'ve been working on IMAX 3D films for almost 20 years and it is gratifying to see the rest of the world finally realize that extra dimension is worth having.

[22:05:11]Hugh - Expert IMAX :Avatar is a wonderful example of what 3D brings to the experience and I\'m proud to have been part of the process of brining it to our IMAX audiences.

[22:05:25]moderator :Hey Guys, 5 more minutes left

[22:06:01]moderator :If you enjoyed this chat, please let us know and I\'ll try to get back to you soon with a simillar project

[22:06:59]moderator :avatar@cinema-city.pl - once again the correct adress to your comments

[22:07:40]moderator :thx yankes, just corrected it

[22:07:46]Hugh - Expert IMAX :Yankes - we watched it hundreds of times in pieces and out of sequence of course - but only a few times as a final assembly with the sound track. It\'s still a thrill.

[22:07:50]Piotr Herod :thank you very much for this event !!!
